NOT JUST A SHELF MODEL. TAKE IT OUTSIDE.

Most printable RC cars are either fragile showpieces or bare chassis without a soul. Nothing you’d hand to a kid for a birthday. Expedition fills the gap: fast enough to drive hard, with opening doors, hood, and tailgate so cargo actually goes inside. Then you crawl rocks or drift a parking lot.

MAKERACER driving through snow on logs
Actually drives

Built to be driven hard. Remotely.

Snow. Mud. Stairs. Parking lots. Add standard RC electronics, pair the remote, and drive. 4x4 drivetrain, third-generation chassis, tested by our team and community across crashes, jumps, and drifts.

MAKERACER on mossy stump in forest
Real suspension

Take it for a walk.

Solid axles for roots, rocks, gravel, dirt, and cracked pavement. Expedition crawls over ugly ground instead of just bouncing across it. Park trail, forest path, sidewalk curb, suspicious pile of rocks — bring it.

Open hood electronics
Real RC hardware

Standard parts. No soldering.

Servo. Motor. ESC. Battery. Receiver. Radio. Optional LEDs. Exact tested parts listed inside, with clear placement and setup. Order them once, drop them in, replace the battery through the hood, and drive.

Printed where it matters

Print it. Break it. Reprint it.

Body, chassis, wheels, tires, bumpers, suspension parts, and trail gear are all printable. Clip a curb? Print a new bumper in an hour or two for cents. No spare part waits, no discontinued plastic.

MAKERACER next to bare RC chassis
Upgradeable build

Make it your rig.

Run printed suspension, wheels, and tires, or swap in compatible hobby-store RC-grade parts where you want more durability, grip, or performance. Start with the printed setup. Upgrade when you want to.

MAKERACER Expedition manual
Designed for builders

A full render manual.

572 pages so you never get stuck. Every step numbered, every part rendered. Written for first-time RC builders, but not boring for pros. If you get lost anyway, Discord is always open.

It just drives really well and is a blast to play with. You guys are doing an amazing job so far.

FROM DOWNLOAD TO FIRST DRIVE.

Print times depend on your printer and settings. With a prepared queue or multiple plates, this is a weekend build. On a single printer, treat it as a multi-evening project.

01

Download the pack.

Open the manual. Realize this is not a toy. It is a small engineering situation.

02

Buy the non-printable parts.

Screws, bearings, electronics. All the tiny things that immediately join the carpet ecosystem.

03

Print the printable parts.

Most of the car comes from your printer. The rest comes from patience, snacks, and pretending you meant to print it that way.

04

Assemble it with the manual.

Print the parts you forgot. This is not failure. This is the traditional second printing ceremony.

05

Drive, break, reprint.

Bring it to a party. Accidentally become the main event.

REAL BUILDERS. REAL PRINTS.

Early Makeracer builders are already printing, scaling, modding, lighting, and testing on real machines. Not just looking at renders.

Built by real makers

The chassis is a brick. It feels like nothing can destroy it. Very rare quality for this scale.

Steve Eckerlein · Printables

I enjoyed driving it indoors because it drifts with those TPU tires. Doing donuts and just messing around is probably my favorite part.

It even survived kids stepping and falling on it. If a part breaks, you can just print it again. The repairability is superb.

So many parts snapped together just right in a satisfying way. I was super impressed with the level of detail in the design.

Makeracer Young Czech Maker Team  ·  MAKERACER s.r.o.

We are a bunch of friends from a Czech animation studio who like making nice things. Makeracer started as a CGI car generator, then somehow turned into a real hobby startup. One we presented to makers and investors at SXSW in Texas.

Not important, though!

The point is we built a fancy 3D-printed RC car we can bring to the studio, race at parties, and show off to animators, filmmakers, kids, adults, basically anyone.

It makes people weirdly happy.

Build one or two, bring them to a party, and you will see. It is universally cool.

STRAIGHT ANSWERS.

The product

Digital download only. Expedition Prototype is a 1:16 3D printable RC truck build pack, delivered as digital files. You get the full STL file library, rendered manual, printing atlas, electronics guide, nonprintables atlas, and future file updates.

Gumroad delivers everything instantly after checkout. No physical parts, printed parts, filament, hardware, tools, or RC electronics are shipped.
Expedition Prototype is a 1:16 3D printable RC expedition truck with 4x4 drivetrain, solid-axle suspension, and standard RC electronics. The build includes a printable body, chassis, wheels, tires, suspension parts, removable trail gear, and a functional hood, tailgate, and doors.

It has crawler-style capabilities, but we think of it as a small expedition vehicle you can take for a walk. Made for snow, mud, stairs, gravel, cracked pavement, roots, rocks, and other real terrain. Small enough for indoor driving too.
No. This is the Expedition Prototype build pack, a complete STL file pack for building a 1:16 3D printable RC truck.

The Makeracer browser configurator is a separate platform we are developing. This product is not the configurator, and buying Expedition does not include access to it.

What you need

Electronics are not included. You bring the filament, screws, bearings, small hardware, and standard RC electronics.

The recommended setup uses a 540-size 35T brushed DC motor, waterproof brushed ESC with 20A rating, 2S LiPo battery, standard 40 × 20 mm servo, 2.4 GHz pistol-grip radio and receiver, and optional 5 mm LEDs. Exact dimensions, connector notes, tested recommendations, and alternatives are listed inside the guides.
No. Expedition uses standard RC electronics, and the recommended setup does not require soldering because the parts connect with standard plugs.

The electronics guide lists the tested motor, ESC, servo, battery, radio, receiver, optional LEDs, and compatible alternatives. You order the parts, install them into the printed build, pair the remote, and drive.
You need a common FDM 3D printer and basic slicer knowledge. Expedition has been tested on Prusa Core ONE, Bambu, and Prusa Mini.

The build uses PLA and PETG, with optional TPU for tires. Polycarbonate (PC Blend) is optional but highly recommended for the chassis if you want extra durability. No resin printer, CNC tools, soldering, or custom electronics required.
The build pack includes the digital files and guides, but not the physical parts. Expect roughly $150 to $300 USD for filament, screws, bearings, small hardware, RC electronics, battery, and charger, depending on your country, material choices, and the electronics setup you choose.

The guides include tested recommendations, exact quantities, and budget alternatives so you can plan the build before ordering parts.
You need basic hobby tools: 2.5 mm hex screwdriver, 2.0 mm hex screwdriver, 7 mm nut wrench, Phillips screwdriver, pliers, and a snap-off knife for small print cleanup and fitting.

No soldering iron, resin printer, CNC machine, or workshop setup is required. You will mostly be screwing metric bolts into printed plastic, so tighten carefully and do not strip the threads.

For LiPo batteries, use a proper LiPo charger and follow the battery manufacturer's safety instructions.

The build

Expedition is a 1:16 scale RC truck, about 35.5 cm long × 16.9 cm wide (roughly 13.9 × 6.65 inches).

Small enough for indoor driving, but built for outdoor terrain like gravel, roots, stairs, mud, snow, and cracked pavement. The printed parts weigh around 1.28 kg, depending on filament, settings, and optional parts.
It's a real multi-part RC project, not a five-minute bench toy. Best for makers comfortable with longer print jobs, basic slicing, and careful assembly.

The rendered manual has 536 steps across 572 pages, with every step numbered and every part rendered. If you can use a slicer, follow instructions, and take your time, you can build this.

Want to check the manual before buying? Claim the sample manual for free →
Around 70 hours of print time, depending on your printer, filament, and settings, plus roughly 6 to 10 hours of assembly.

With a prepared print queue or multiple printers, it can be a weekend build. On a single printer, treat it as a few-evening garage project, not a one-evening miracle print.
Yes, if they match the required size, voltage, connector, and performance range. The guides include tested recommendations and dimensional requirements so you can choose compatible alternatives. If you are not sure, ask in the Discord before ordering parts.
Yes. You can build Expedition with printed suspension, wheels, and tires, or swap in compatible store-bought RC parts where specified.

That includes compatible crawler wheels and tires, plus compatible RC suspension parts. Exact sizes are listed inside the guide, so you are not guessing from product photos at 1 a.m.

After purchase

After checkout, Gumroad gives you instant access to the digital build pack.
